This morning, as Australia burns, two activists protest the Adani Carmichael coalmine by blocking the entrance to Abbot Point coal terminal in Bowen to both coal trains as well as workers entering the facility.

Eleanor Haas and Gali Schell have responded to the devastating fires around Australia by restricting the export of coal out of Australia and delaying work at the coal terminal, with a banner that states “Aus is burning. Coal is fuelling the fire. Ausgov + Adani = arsonists”.

Schell, when asked why they were blocking Abbot Point coal terminal, an Adani owned asset, stated, “Over 12 million acres have been devastated by fire throughout Australia. If you are looking for someone to blame, point your fingers at the Australian government and Adani”. Similarly, Haas responded, “Prevention is the first line of defence. The increase in frequency, duration and intensity of bushfires in the future will be attributed to by the Adani mine”.

Adani’s Abbot Point coal terminal is in a controversial location given the close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef which allegedly has the potential to be severely impacted by the increase in coal ships that will need to transit through this reef to collect and transport coal overseas.
