Soon to be Adani’s railway, blocked by 18 year old climate activist, stopping all coal entering the Adani owned Abbot Point.

Police on scene: A 18 year old female climate activist has blocked  Newlands Rail line that transports coal to the Adani owned Abbot Point Coal Port since 5.30am.  This is part of a nation wide campaign to stop Adani’s proposed Carmichael mine and rail project which would open up the Galilee Basin to coal mining and exportation.

Adani intends to connect the Galilee Basin to the Newlands coal rail network. This rail project would open the floodgates to significantly more coal mining in the Galilee Basin. Five mines proposed for the Galilee basin have received federal environmental approval which include Adani, GVK/Hancock and Clive Palmer’s Waratah Coal project.

To open the Galilee Basin would be fundamentally at odds with protecting Australia from the impacts of climate change. If all of the Galilee Basin coal was burned, it is estimated that 705 million tonnes of CO2 would be released each year – more than 1.3 times Australia’s current annual emissions.

“To trust that someone else will solve the biggest issue facing our world will be lethal. Every person needs to take action against climate change and the corruption that brought it to us”, Hannah.

Climate change is driven by rising greenhouse gas emissions, particularly from the burning of coal, oil and gas. The solution is clear, we must stop the extraction and burning of fossil fuels.
